Medical Technology—also known as Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Science—is an essential healthcare profession that combines science, technology, and patient care. Medical Laboratory Scientists perform the laboratory testing that helps healthcare providers diagnose diseases, monitor treatments and make informed decisions that impact patient care.
A degree in Medical Technology provides a direct pathway into an in-demand healthcare profession while also serving as a strong foundation for graduate education, including medical school and life sciences programs. Students develop expertise in laboratory techniques, critical thinking, and collaboration–skills valued across healthcare careers.
Our mission is to prepare Medical Laboratory Scientists who are dedicated to serving the unique and diverse healthcare needs of Hawaiʻi. We invite you to explore our program and discover how you can make a meaningful impact in our community while building a fulfilling career.
Our program is small, supportive, and built on the spirit of aloha. Students become part of our Med Tech ʻohana, learning alongside dedicated faculty and gaining hands-on experience through clinical placements with our trusted affiliates throughout Hawai’i. Through mentorship, collaboration, and real-world training, students develop the confidence and skills needed to become successful laboratory professionals.
We are proud to be the only NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program in Hawaiʻi and the only undergraduate program housed within the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Whether you are a current UH Mānoa student exploring healthcare pathways, a Kapiʻolani Community College MLT student planning your next step, a transfer student, or a student pursuing a second degree, our program offers a pathway to a rewarding career in laboratory medicine.
Welcome to the Med Tech ʻohana!
