MT Curriculum

Curriculum & Course Plan

Our curriculum leads to a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (also known as Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science). Students in our program gain foundational knowledge and hands-on experience that prepares them for a successful career in the clinical laboratory field.

If you're curious about the profession or want a head start, consider taking MEDT 151 – Introduction to Medical Technology, a great preview of the field.

Clinical Training

After completing academic coursework, students enter a 6-month, non-credit clinical training program offered in partnership with our clinical affiliate hospitals and laboratories. This non-credit certificate course replaces the former MEDT 591 course.

During training, students rotate through all major departments, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed professionals. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification exam to become nationally certified Medical Laboratory Scientists.

Important:

  • A grade of C or higher is required for all MEDT courses and senior MICR courses.

  • Only one grade of C-, D+, or D is allowed in a math/science course that is not MICR 461/L or MICR 463/L.

  • Any MEDT course may only be repeated once.

  • Course plans may vary depending on your background, transfer credits, or degree status. Students are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and complete non-MEDT courses before entering the program when possible.

  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all UH Mānoa General Education Core and Graduation Requirements are met. While academic advisors can provide guidance, students must plan out their non-MEDT courses based on availability and workload.
