Our in-person Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science is designed for students who have completed a Medical Laboratory Technician program (2+2 Route) or have completed or are currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree, preferrably in a health or science (2nd-Degree Route). Currently, our ground program admits for both Fall and Spring semesters on a rolling basis.

Ground Program Requirements
2+2 Route (MLT to MLS)
- Successful completion of a nationally accredited Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- National MLT certification (ASCP)
Second-Degree Route
- Successful completion of a Bachelors degree from an accredited university in a health or science related field
- Completion of prerequisite science and math courses. Two prerequisites may be taken the first semester as a Medical Technology major:
- ENG 100 (Composition) or higher
- MATH 100 (Survey of Mathematics) or higher
- CHEM 161/L & 162/L (General Chemistry)
- BIOL 171/L (General Biology)
- MEDT 151 (Introduction to Medical Technology I)
- MEDT 251 (Introduction to Medical Technology II)
- MICR 351/L (Biology of Microorganisms)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
How to Apply:
- Transfer/Apply to UH Mānoa and be admitted to the University (if applicable).
- Transfer credits from outside colleges/universities (if applicable).
- Note: transfer students with non-UH credits must undergo a Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) after being admitted to UH and must pay a $200 tuition deposit and submit all official transcripts to UH. Please contact UH Admissions for more information.
- Complete the following: Ground Checklist and the last two pages of the MT Ground Application
- In the subject of your email briefly describe why you're interested in the program and which semester you'd like to start by ideally (1 paragraph)
- Attach in your email: a copy of your MLT certification (if applicable) and all official transcripts
- Submit all documents in a single email to medtech@hawaii.edu and please cc rhena@hawaii.edu with subject line: "Medical Technology Ground Program Application [2+2 Route or 2nd Degree Route] for [First and Last Name]"
- Deadlines: March 1 (Fall Admission) and October 1 (Spring Admission)
After you submit your application, an academic advisor will follow-up with you on the status of your application, a curriculum plan, and other next steps.
The program has limited lab capacity on campus of 14 students, thus enrollment may be limited if the number of applications exceeds the capacity. We highly recommend that you submit your applications as soon as possible.
